Identification of the Problem

Injection pads from medical supply companies are expensive. They do not last long and are not waterproof. The Syphon long-lasting injection pad allows liquids to be withdrawn from the injection pad. They last longer than commercially purchased pads and are very durable.

Unique Idea

By making a waterproof outer layer on a homemade silicone injection pad, we can withdraw liquids from the pad, thereby extending its use. This pad is for use on table tops and simulated manikins.

Objectives

Learners will demonstrate accurate techniques for intramuscular and subcutaneous injections using The Syphon long-lasting injection pad.

Supplies/Ingredients

These ingredients create two injection pads that are approximately 4.75 inches long, 2.125 inches wide and 1.75 inches deep. You may need to adjust the amount of ingredients if you use a different size mini loaf pan.

  • 2 mini loaf silicone pans approximately 5 inches x 2.5 inches x 2 inches deep
  • 5 inch x 5 inch or larger piece of cardboard to use for templates
  • 5 inch x 5 inch or larger piece of heavy duty plastic at least 6 mm thick
  • silicone shaper brush or a chip brush that will need to be discarded after use
  • tongue depressors
  • cotton tipped applicators
  • gloves
  • clothing protection
  • markers
  • scissors
  • liquid silicone parts A and B
  • silicone thickener add-in
  • silicone softener add-in
  • silicone mold release agent spray 
  • silicone pigments in various colors (flesh or fashion colors)
  • 2 or more mixing cups of various sizes

Steps to Creating the Solution

1. Prepare supplies

  • Thoroughly clean silicone pans to ensure they are clean and free of all debris before use.
  • Create a cardboard template for plastic layers. Trim the template to measure 4 inches x 1.75 inches with rounded corners (template A).

2. Create Top and Side Layer

This is the “sealer” layer to help the pad hold water/injectables.

  • Don clothing protection and gloves during the creation of the silicone layers.
  • Spray pans on all sides with silicone mold release agent. Make sure all sides have a good coating.
  • Open and mix silicone parts A and B. Mix each separately with separate tools within their buckets.
  • In a mixing cup, pour 1.5 oz of silicone part A, add 1.5 oz part B, and add 10 drops of silicone thickener. Mix all parts well.
  • Work quickly to coat the 2 mini loaf pans. Silicone thickener makes silicone set faster than it normally does. Using a silicone shaper brush or chip brush, generously cover the bottom of each mini loaf pan and cover the sides to the top of each pan. This layer needs to be about 0.25 inches thick.
  • Tap pans to bring up air bubbles. Pop any large air bubbles.

3. Create Dermis Layer

  • In a mixing cup, pour 1.5 oz silicone part B. Use the end of a cotton tipped applicator or a tongue depressor to add a small amount of silicone pigment into the cup. Mix very well until all streaks are blended into a uniform color.
  • Add 1.5 oz silicone part A into the mixture and mix well. Add more silicone pigment if desired to achieve the desired color.
  • Pour a layer 3/8 to ½ inch thick onto the first layer. Pick up each plan to help the mixture flow across all parts of the first layer. Make sure to fully cover the first layer. Tap each pan on your work surface to help air bubbles rise to the surface. If air bubbles do not pop, use the stick end of a cotton applicator or a tongue depressor to pop large bubbles.
  • Let dry until sticky.

4. Add First Plastic Layer

  • Use a marker to trace the cardboard template twice on the heavy duty plastic. Use scissors to cut the two traced pieces. Check that both are slightly smaller (about 0.25 inches) than the mini loaf pan layers you are working on.
  • Place one plastic piece over the top layer of each mini loaf pan. Make sure the plastic does not touch the sides of each pan. If the plastic is touching the sides of a pan, it will cause breaks in the layers and make the pad less able to retain liquids.

5. Create Fat Layer

  • In a mixing cup, pour 2 oz silicone part B, add a small amount of silicone pigment into the cup, and mix until no streaks are seen.
  • Pour 2 oz silicone part A into the mixing cup and stir well.
  • Add 4 oz of silicone softener into the mixture and stir well.
  • Pour this layer onto the first plastic layer. The fat layer should be about 1 inch thick.
  • Let dry until sticky.

6. Create Muscle Layer

  • In a mixing cup, pour 1.5 oz of silicone part B and add silicone pigment color to reflect your desired color. Mix well.
  • Pour 1.5 oz of silicone part A into the mixture and blend well.
  • Pour this layer onto the fat layer in each mini loaf pan.
  • Let dry until sticky.

7. Add Second Plastic Layer

  • Use a marker to trace cardboard template twice on the heavy duty plastic. Use scissors to cut the two traced pieces. Check that both are slightly smaller (about 0.25 inches) than the mini loaf pan layers you are working on.
  • Place one plastic piece over the muscle layer of each mini loaf pan. Make sure the plastic does not touch the sides of each pan. If the plastic is touching the sides of a pan, it will cause breaks in the layers and make the pad less able to retain liquids.

8. Create Final Sealer Layer

  • In a mixing cup, pour 1.5 oz silicone part A, 1.5 oz part B, and add 10 drops silicone thickener. Mix well.
  • Working quickly, use a silicone shaper brush or chip brush to make the final layer. This layer should join the first side layer making a coating surrounding the pad and making it less likely to lose liquids that are injected into it. This layer needs to be about 0.25 inches thick.

9. Remove The Syphon From Silicone Loaf Pan

  • Remove The Syphon from the silicone loaf pan once cured.

Notes:

  1. This pad is for use on table tops and simulated manikins because a needle can still puncture the bottom of the pad.
  2. Liquids that are injected can be withdrawn with a syringe.
