Updated Volume Defines Role of Four Academic Nurse Educators

Washington, DC — The National League for Nursing announces the publication of The Scope of Practice for Academic Nurse Educators, 4th Edition by the NLN Press, formally classifying the four distinct pathways to certification in academic nursing education. Two certifications — Certified Novice Nurse Educator and Certified Academic Practical/Vocational Nurse Educator — appear for the first time in this latest edition of The Scope of Practice, having been identified just within the past five years as specialized roles within higher education in nursing.

Co-edited by NLN Chief Legal Officer Linda Christensen, EdD, JD, MSN, RN, CNE, FAAN, and Larry Simmons, PhD, RN, CNE, NEA-BC, CGNC, ICE-CCP, FAAN, recently retired NLN senior director of credentialing, this newly published volume thoroughly defines the following roles:

  • Academic Nurse Educator (CNE®)
  • Academic Clinical Nurse Educator (CNE®cl)
  • Academic Novice Nurse Educator (CNE®n); newly identified in 2020
  • Academic Practical/Vocational Nurse Educator (CNE®pv); newly identified in 2024

Along with definitions, scope of practice and standards of practice for each designation cover the competencies and task statements that have been developed over time in the historic evolution of academic nursing education, from its evidence-based foundations to formal certifications. Concluding chapters focus on the literature that underlies the various roles of the academic nurse educator and the future of academic nursing education, including the potential identification of additional academic nurse educator roles.

“We believe this publication makes an important contribution to the field of academic nursing. Nurses seeking to transition to the specialized advanced practice role of academic nurse educator will see this practical guide as a detailed blueprint for earning their certification, while gaining a deeper understanding of the mission and competencies required to demonstrate mastery,” said  NLN Chair Yolanda VanRiel, PhD, RN, MEDSURG-BC, OCN, CNE, ANEF, FAAN, chair of the Department of Nursing, North Carolina Central University and patient placement coordinator at First Health of the Carolinas-Moore Regional Hospital.

“The National League for Nursing certification program and through it, nurse educators who earn one or more of the CNE credentials, represent the highest standard of excellence in academic nursing education. This latest volume of The Scope of Practice will inspire even more nurse educators to take their careers to the next level in preparing nursing graduates fully capable of delivering the outstanding, equitable patient care every community and country deserves,” said NLN President and CEO Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN.
