Identification of the Problem

Students observing simulations often do not take notes. They observe as if watching a play or performance instead of being active participants in simulations.

Unique Idea

I created a structured observer form to help students critically think and enhance their focus on critical NCLEX categories during simulation exercises. The structured observer system is designed to deepen learning and improve communication skills. When students become involved in a way that makes them engage their clinical judgement within the simulation, they are no longer just watching a performance.

Objectives

The Structured Simulation Observer Form enhances student engagement and critical thinking by guiding observation of key NCLEX categories during simulation scenarios. It promotes deeper learning through purposeful observation.

  1. Students will analyze team communication, leadership roles, delegation, medication safety, and cultural considerations observed during simulations. 

  1. Students will actively engage in simulation by observing teamwork dynamics and reflecting on these observations to develop essential skills for comprehensive debriefing.

Supplies/Ingredients

Steps to Create the Solution

1. Simulation Setup: Five students participate in the simulation scenario, while the other five will serve as observers.

2. Observer Roles: Each observer is assigned only one section from our Structured Simulation Observer Form. The sections align with key NCLEX categories: Safe and Effective Care Environment, Health Promotion and Maintenance, Psychosocial Integrity, and Physiological Integrity, and Teamwork and communication (although not an NCLEX category, is important to the current generation of nurses).

3. Focused Observation: Observers make detailed notes on their assigned section, paying close attention to how their peers address specific aspects of patient care.

4. Debriefing Leadership: After the simulation, observers lead a discussion on their respective categories. This peer-led debriefing encourages a deeper understanding of the simulation outcomes and facilitates critical thinking.
