Wellness Expert to Address Community of Nurse Educators at NLN Education Summit
Dr. Bernadette Melnyk Will Present on Preventing Burnout & Enhancing Well-Being in Faculty & Nursing Students: Evidence-Based Strategies that Work
Washington, DC — Burnout and the overwhelming pressures that come with a career in nursing have increasingly been cited among the reasons for early retirement in the nursing workforce. These, in turn, are contributing to the challenges health care and academic institutions now face in retaining qualified, experienced nurses and nurse educators, further aggravating a persistent nursing shortage.
At this year’s National Faculty Meeting, held during the 2023 NLN Education Summit, Dr. Bernadette Mazurek Melnyk, vice president for health promotion and chief wellness officer at The Ohio State University, will tackle this issue head on in her presentation on “Preventing Burnout and Enhancing Well-Being in Faculty and Nursing Students: Evidence-Based Strategies that Work.” The meeting will take place on Saturday morning, September 30, the final day of the gathering at National Harbor near Washington, D.C.
Dr. Melnyk will describe the current state of burnout and mental health prevalent among faculty and nursing students, delving into root causes of burnout and outlining proven effective strategies to combat it. Attendees will gain a deeper understanding of the occupational hazards to their mental health and come away with a blueprint for improving their emotional well-being.
“The National League for Nursing has long believed in creating academic environments that nurture emotional well-being, promote a culture of self-care, and refuse to tolerate bullying in any form. We so look forward to what promises to be Dr. Melnyk’s impactful presentation,” said NLN Chair Kathleen Poindexter, PhD, RN, CNE, ANEF, interim associate dean for academic affairs and assistant dean for undergraduate programs and faculty development at Michigan State University in Lansing.
“In helping us navigate burnout and other mental health challenges unique to health care professionals, Dr. Melnyk could not offer a timelier roadmap to good personal mental health. As nurses and nurse educators, the impulse to care for others is one of the central driving forces in our daily work. But, when we sacrifice our own mental health in the process, we may risk losing what we have worked so hard to achieve for our students and our patients,” said NLN President and CEO Beverly Malone, PhD, RN, FAAN.
