Jayla Wright
Overview
Jayla is a 24-year-old trans woman of color living in a metropolitan area. She grew-up with two sisters, a brother, and was raised by both of her parents. At a young age Jayla would play dress-up with her sisters rather than playing different sports with her brother. She was often disciplined for wearing dresses and playing in her mother’s makeup.
As she aged, her relationship with her family became increasingly more difficult. Her parents confronted her at the age of 17 because she was caught wearing women’s clothing. They gave Jayla an option to stop dressing in feminine-identifying clothing or “get out” of their home. Jayla left that evening and has not spoken to her parents or siblings since then.
Simulation Scenario 1 takes place in an Emergency Department. Jayla fell off public transport five days ago. She has a wound on her left upper thigh that will not heal. She tried to clean and bandage it herself, but when it started draining her friends urged her to come to the hospital. Jayla is experiencing identification documentation issues as she is unable to change government issued documents.
